Shen Yun’s vocalists are reviving an age-old tradition. |
Ancient Chinese theater and early European opera once shared the same singing technique (known in traditional opera as bel canto), which is believed to produce the most beautiful and pure tone of voice. The true bel canto technique for singing in the upper register, however, has since been lost in both the East and the West. Shen Yun’s singers are now bringing this most traditional and classical technique back to the modern stage. |
The primary trait that distinguishes Shen Yun vocalists is their use of bel canto technique to sing Chinese text. This means that the singer must, while meeting the challenges inherent in bel canto, retain proper Chinese pronunciation and diction. Meanwhile, their original lyrics relay touching messages probing the deeper meaning of life. |
